We claimed Rigby for $25,000 out of his winning race at Aqueduct on February 6th, 2011. Rigby is a four-year-old chestnut colt by champion sprinter Speightstown out of the Seattle Slew mare Copano Bay, herself a full sister to the multiple Grade 1 winning mare Lakeway. Before we claimed him, Rigby had been running mostly on turf, but we think he’s actually better on dirt, and in fact three of his four lifetime wins (from a total of 11 starts) have come on dirt. Our trainer, Bruce Brown, plans to run Rigby at middle distances (a mile to a mile and a sixteenth), both in dirt races and as a main-track-only entry. In his first race for Castle Village Farm, on Feb. 21st, Rigby came from off the pace to finish 3rd in a $47,000 allowance, just missing the win by less than a length at the wire. He followed that up with a gutsy win in a $42,000 starter allowance on March 25th at Aqueduct. Rigby was temporarily sidelined by a minor infection, but should be racing again at Saratoga.
